Let me describe Biofiltration a bit further.
Biofiltration is underestimated because how it works can not be visual for all of you,
but it is most important aspect for Nishikigoi.
This is the chart of Nitrogen cycle.
Organic substances such as excrements of Nishikigoi, left-over feed, mucous, carcass of
plankton is to be in process of following.
Taking proteins for example, proteins are decomposed by Heterotrophic bacterium
over to amino acid.
Then, it gradually comes to low-molecular status, turning into NH3, NO2, NO3.
What is purifying water is nothing but bacteria like this.
In case that setting up new pond or cleansing filtering materials thoroughly
by tap water,
it may look as if water was transparent and clean.
But, bacteria which is essential is not there.
There will be strong likelihood that Nishikigoi get sick if it is kept breeding under
the situation which water condition can be most hazardous.
Under that circumstances, hazardous substances for Nishikigoi like ammonia,
nitrite are accumulated.
On one hand it is important to monitor visible contamination, but on the other hand,
it is more important to deal with invisible hazardous substances.
That is the reason why biofiltration should not be underestimated.
Then, what is going to happen with the situation of pond in which few bacteria is
in active.
All of the matters which is left as they are without being decomposed such as fallen
leaves, left-over feed,
excrements, ammonia get pond cloudy and white bubbles derived from proteins float
around, making water condition worse.
Furthermore, phytoplankton, algae are generated and water turns into greed due to
those substances.
It is natural that nishikigoi would not be eager to have feed, so that it can lead to
develop diseases.
Under the condition that few bacteria is in active, it would make the situation worse
if medication is used because it deteriorates the water condition in which ammonia,
nitrite increases.
It ends up in accelerating development of disease.
It is absolutely impossible to maintain good water condition in the pond without
bacteria being in active.
